It was only after the announcement by the Coast Guard on Thursday that she would be buried with full military honours on Saturday at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Cayuga Heights, NY, that word of her death spread nationwide. Newspapers in central New York carried a brief obituary, but her death went unreported virtually everywhere else. It was perhaps reflective of that modesty that when she died on December 8 at 101 in an Ithaca nursing home, the news did not travel widely.
